About Our Academy

The South African Shotokan Karate Academy (SASKA) was started in 1990 under leadership of Shihan Koos Burger. It is a growing style with at least 1500 affiliated members in 49 clubs, making it one of the biggest styles in South Africa. Our pride is not in our numbers, but in the very high standard of tha karate that we practice. This is partly reflected in our various national and international achievements, although so called "sport karate" forms only a small part of the spectrum we offer. Our main aim is to help form an effective fighting style in our students that will serve well in any situation. we try to support our members in their different aims in practicing karate, whether it is building fitness, strength, flexibility, self-defence, competition or development of a strong peacefull mind. Meeting our karateka, you will experience that "something" special.

  • Shihan Koos Burger was born on 27 Apr 1943 and started karate in 1963. For the past forty years he practiced karate for most days of the week, ceaselesly perfecting the budo way. He trained with many renowned masters which included: sensei's Kase, Shirai, Kanazawa, Enoeda, Yamaguchi, Tanaka, Tambourini, Kawazoe, Naito, Kasuya, Koga, Kawamura, Sugimoto, Asai, Higaonna, Ozawa, .
